This week we’re going to be looking at some of the different challenges business owners and managers face as their businesses grow and develop over time.

Naturally, we’re still interested in people (we’re in HR after all!) but this time we’re going to be discussing how you can find and keep the right people for your business, as well as how you can avoid hiring the wrong people.

Recruiting the right people

First things first, let’s take a look at how you can get the right people – equipped with all the relevant skills and experience – to work for your business.

Hands up who has asked their best mate, best mate’s sister or significant other to come and work for them?

Now, hands up if it ended in disaster!

While it can be great fun to work with your friends and family members, it can also prove extremely difficult to maintain the level of professional distance required to manage your team effectively when someone close to you enters your organisation.

Remember, when you’re thinking about taking on new members of staff, it’s extremely important to consider each individual candidate’s skills, experience and potential – as well as whether or not she or he will fit into your organisation – before you begin narrowing the field.

Though recruitment is about much more than a “job spec”, this can be a great place to start.

An effective job spec details the role which needs to be filled as well as the ideal candidate. When drawing up a job spec, think about the different skills your future employee will need to possess in order to do their job well. Think about the character traits she or he will have, and the experience she or he will have gained along the way.

The more detail you can provide, the better. Not only will you gain a clearer picture of the person or people your organisation requires, but your prospective employees will better understand what’s required of them too!

It’s about you too

Remember, a good recruitment “process” tells people a great deal about you as an employer – so it’s critical that you get it right.  

The term “restructure” can strike the fear of god into many a business owner – and it’s not just in times of downturn that a businesses may need to restructure and potentially make certain team members redundant.  

Recruitment represents an important period during which you may need to call in the experts. Getting recruitment wrong can not only prove expensive in terms of potential legal claims but can spell disaster if you don’t communicate properly with your team.

Up-skilling, or training, is another often overlooked business process.  How many times have you become frustrated with a staff member when they haven’t been doing things as quickly or skilfully as you need them to be? How frequently have you become disillusioned with the abilities of your team?

Often the answer lies in up-skilling. Simply consider looking at where an individual currently is in terms of their skill level, and figuring out where they need to be and how to get them there.  

When it comes to the people in your business, it is so important to have plans in place – rather than constantly finding yourself on the back foot, be present and look ahead.

New Manager Bootcamp

Ideal for new managers, or those that would like a refresher. This half day session covers the following topics:

  • Identifying different management styles, and how they can be used to motivate
  • Understanding different personality types, and how this impacts your management style and how people work
  • Understanding employee motivation and how to get the best out of your team
  • How to set and review goals
  • How to have difficult conversations
  • Essential employment law

The course will be run by Emily Perry, an expert HR consultant with over 15 years experience of supporting managers in an HR role.
